Heat on the Horizon: Willamette Valley, Week 31

Willamette Valley — July 30, 2026

Where We Stand

Through July 30, the valley has accumulated 1,370 GDDs (base 50F) across 121 days since April 1. This week contributed 126 GDDs under a high of 84F and a low of 54F, with no recorded precipitation. Bud break came April 4. Bloom closed the first week or two of June . The vines are now 58 days into the post-bloom phase, and the fruit that set is developing under conditions that have remained consistently warm and dry.

The Week Ahead

The seven-day forecast carries no precipitation and a temperature arc that builds sharply toward the weekend. Highs move from 82F and 88F in the first two days, pull back to 77F midweek, then reassert at 82F and 85F before reaching 98F and 96F on days six and seven. That late-week spike is the dominant feature of this forecast window. Two consecutive days in the upper 90s at this point in berry development — when skins are still forming and canopy demand on water is high — represents a significant thermal load. The models show no moderation from marine influence during that stretch.

Season Context

At 1,370 GDDs on day 121, the season is tracking with meaningful heat accumulation for this date. The bloom-to-now interval has been dry throughout, which supports even fruit development but concentrates any heat stress effects when temperatures spike. A two-day event at 98F and 96F in late July is not unusual for the southern valley, but it bears watching across all sub-appellations given that there has been no precipitation to buffer soil temperatures or replenish surface moisture since the season's dry stretch began. The trajectory into August will matter considerably — whether temperatures moderate after this event or whether this week marks the beginning of a sustained hot pattern is the question the next forecast window will begin to answer.
